A proper rack is the difference between a five minute service call and an afternoon of tracing cable. In commercial buildings we mount equipment in a rack sized for what it holds plus what gets added, manage the cable so individual runs can be traced, plan for airflow, and label everything. The immediate benefit is that it looks organized. The lasting benefit is that the next person to touch it can work out what is going on.

Conditions in Rapid City

Rapid City covers a lot of ground for its population, and the commercial building stock runs from downtown brick to newer construction out toward the interstate. That range matters, because a cable pathway that is straightforward in a 2015 office building is a genuine problem in a downtown block with plaster walls and no accessible ceiling. Wind is a constant consideration for anything mounted outdoors, and the temperature swing across a year is wide enough to matter for equipment that lives in an unconditioned space. We plan around the specific building rather than around a standard approach.
