The custom homes around Red Rock Estates and the Golf Club at Red Rock on the west side of Rapid City were built with real technology budgets. Through the 2000s and early 2010s, that often meant an Elan system: music in the ceilings of every main room, keypads by the doors, a touch panel in the kitchen, maybe a theater downstairs. It was premium equipment, professionally installed, and for years it worked.
Then the updates stopped. The story we hear from homeowners in these neighborhoods is remarkably consistent. The touch panel is dark or frozen. The app disappeared from the phone, or stopped connecting after some update years ago. A few keypads still do something, most do not, and at some point the family quietly stopped using the system altogether. None of that happened because anyone did anything wrong. It happened because of how these systems were built to be supported.
Why Elan systems age the way they do
Elan was a dealer platform. The system in your home was designed, programmed, and maintained by an integrator, and it was excellent when that relationship was active. But the brand changed corporate hands more than once over the years, older generations of hardware fell out of software support, and phone apps stopped keeping up with new iOS and Android releases. In many cases the original installing dealer retired, closed, or left the market entirely.
That is the real failure mode. Not a dramatic breakdown, but a system frozen at the moment its maintenance stopped. And because the hardware was never sold retail, there is no shelf replacement when a processor or touch panel finally dies. It is not a fix you can buy at a big box store.
The wiring in your walls is still worth real money
Here is the part homeowners consistently underestimate. The most expensive part of the original installation was never the processor. It was the labor and the wiring: in-ceiling speakers in every zone, home-run speaker wire, keypad locations, network cable, and a dedicated equipment closet. Quality in-ceiling speakers age gracefully, and copper in the wall does not go obsolete.
Running that infrastructure into a finished home today would cost far more than it did during construction. A dead control system in a fully wired home is a completely different starting point than an unwired home. You are much closer to a great modern system than it feels like when nothing responds.
Path one: stabilize what you have
Sometimes a system can be coaxed back for a while. A reboot sequence, a reconfigured network connection, a sourced used part. We will be honest about this path: parts are scarce, there is no software future, and money spent here is spent on a platform moving in one direction. It can make sense if you are selling the home soon. It rarely makes sense if you plan to stay.
Path two: a new control layer on your existing bones
This is the most common outcome, and usually the right one. The speakers, the wiring, and the locations stay. The aging processor and interfaces are replaced with a current platform, and the system is reprogrammed around how your household actually lives now. Streaming services are built in instead of bolted on, control lives on the phones you already carry plus wall interfaces where they genuinely help, and the whole thing is maintainable again because the platform is current and the dealer is local.

Path three: modernize the foundation too
If the home is still running on the network equipment from the original install, the honest recommendation is to start there. Every modern system, from music to cameras to the thermostat, rides on the home network, and a router from the previous decade will undermine all of it. For homes with a theater that has not been touched since the original build, a theater refresh usually folds into this same project cleanly.
