Building the right WiFi for a Black Hills vacation home

A vacation home in the Black Hills is a harder networking problem than most offices. The construction is heavy: log, timber, stone, and metal roofing that block signal. The property is spread out, with a main house, a guest cabin, a shop, and a gate a quarter mile away. The internet feed is often satellite or fixed wireless with its own quirks. And the owner is 800 miles away for most of the year, so when the network goes down there is nobody there to unplug the router and plug it back in.

We design networks for commercial buildings across the region, and the same principles apply to a second home. Here is how to build one that holds up.

Start with the internet feed, not the WiFi

Everything downstream depends on what comes into the house. In the Hills, that might be cable in town, fiber in a few newer developments, fixed wireless from a tower, or satellite. Each behaves differently, and the network has to be designed around it.

If the feed is satellite or fixed wireless, the equipment the provider ships is built to get you online, not to run a property. It needs to sit behind a proper router that handles the local network, and that router needs to be one that can be managed remotely. If the feed drops, the owner should know, and ideally the system should recover on its own.

For properties with two options, such as fixed wireless plus a cellular backup, a router that fails over between them keeps the cameras and the freeze sensors reporting even when the primary feed is down. That failover is the single most valuable feature on a remote property's network.

Wired backbone first

The temptation in a cabin is to put one strong wireless router in the middle and hope. Log walls and stone chimneys turn that into a dead zone on the far side of the house. The fix is the same as in a commercial building: run cable to where the coverage needs to be, then put access points there.

During construction, that means Cat6 to every ceiling location where an access point will go, to the TV locations, to the office, and outdoors to the deck and the gate. If the guest cabin or shop is more than a short run away, fiber between buildings or a point-to-point wireless link keeps them on the same network without burying a cable that will eventually get cut. This is why we push builders to include the network in the pre-wire scope. It cannot be done as cleanly once the tongue-and-groove ceilings are up.

Access points placed for the floor plan

A vacation home often has a great room with a 25-foot ceiling, a loft, a walkout basement, and a master wing behind a stone fireplace. One access point does not cover that. We map coverage from the plans, place ceiling-mounted access points where they actually reach the rooms, and add an outdoor-rated unit for the deck and hot tub. The units are managed as one system, so a phone moves from the loft to the deck without dropping.

Coverage is not the only concern. Capacity matters when the house fills up. A family reunion with 20 phones and a couple of streaming TVs is a very different load than the owner alone with a laptop, and the network has to be designed for the weekend it is full, not the Tuesday it is empty.

Segment what runs the house from what the guests use

A vacation home network is carrying more than guest phones. Cameras, the thermostat, leak and freeze sensors, the lighting system, and the door locks all live on it, and those are the devices that need to stay reachable when no one is home. Put them on their own network, separate from guest WiFi, so a guest's laptop cannot see the cameras and a misbehaving smart TV cannot take down the sensors. We explained the reasoning in why cameras should not share a network with accounting, and the logic is identical for a home.

Remote management is not optional

The defining feature of a second-home network is that the owner is not there. The equipment has to be manageable from a phone anywhere. That means a router and access points on a platform that shows the owner, or us, what is online and what is not, lets us restart a device remotely, and sends an alert when the internet feed goes down. A network that requires someone to drive up from Rapid City to reboot a box is a network that will be down for a week in January.

Power and the equipment location

Everything should run back to one clean location, on a UPS, in a spot that stays above freezing. A rack in an unconditioned crawlspace or garage is a rack that fails in winter. A small wall-mount rack in a utility closet, with the switch, router, camera recorder, and audio gear together, is the difference between a system that runs for a decade and a drawer of blinking boxes that nobody can troubleshoot.
