Low voltage is the trade that costs the least to do right during framing and the most to fix after drywall. For general contractors and custom builders in the Black Hills, the difference between a smooth technology package and a change-order headache almost always traces back to one thing: when the integrator got involved.
This guide is written for the GC. It covers when to bring us in, what gets missed before the walls close, and what you should demand at closeout so the system you hand your client actually works.
Bring the integrator in at design, not at trim
The most common and most expensive mistake is treating low voltage as a trim-phase decision. By the time the drywall is up, the opportunity to run clean cable, place backboxes correctly, and provide conduit for the future is gone. Everything after that is a compromise, and compromises on a finished home or building show up as visible cable, wireless workarounds, and awkward equipment locations.
We would rather see the plans at the design stage. Even a short review before framing lets us mark the right rough-in locations, size the pathways, and flag conflicts with electrical, HVAC, and plumbing before anyone is standing in the way of anyone else. That coordination is exactly what the contractor path is built around.
What gets missed before drywall
A few things get missed on nearly every project where low voltage was an afterthought:
- Pathways to the equipment location. The network rack or equipment closet needs conduit or clear cable paths from every part of the building. Miss this and you are fishing walls later.
- Enough cable, and the right kind. Pulling a spare run during framing costs almost nothing. Pulling it after drywall costs a wall repair. We pull for what the building needs now and for what it is likely to need in five years.
- Conduit for the future. A single run of empty conduit from the rack to the attic or a mechanical room is the cheapest insurance a builder can offer a client. It turns a future upgrade into a pull instead of a demolition.
- Backing and boxes for displays and access points. Wall-mounted displays, cameras, and wireless access points all need backing and a box in the right spot. Deciding this at trim means blocking is already closed up.
- Coordination with the electrician. Power needs to land where the equipment lands. We coordinate this directly so your electrician is not guessing and you are not mediating.
The rough-in walk is worth the hour
Before drywall, we walk the building with the plans and confirm every rough-in location against reality. Framing changes. A window moves, a wall shifts, a client changes their mind about a TV location. The rough-in walk catches those changes while they are still cheap to accommodate. For a GC, that single hour prevents most of the change orders that low voltage is famous for.
Documentation you should demand at closeout
Here is where a lot of low-voltage subs fall short, and where it costs you after the client moves in. At closeout you should receive, and should ask for by name:
- As-built documentation. What was installed, where it runs, and where every cable terminates.
- A labeled network and rack. Every port and every run labeled, so the next service call is fast instead of forensic.
- A device and credential handoff. The client should own their system, not be locked to a vendor to make a simple change.
- Owner training. Someone on the client side should be walked through the day-to-day use before the job closes.
If a sub cannot hand you that package, the system is a liability the first time something needs attention. This is the structured cabling standard we hold ourselves to on every build.
Why one sub for the whole low-voltage package
Splitting security, network, cabling, and AV across three vendors means three schedules, three points of finger-pointing, and no single party accountable for the result. On a build, that friction lands on you. Bringing it under one integrator means one schedule to coordinate, one company that documents everything, and one number to call after closeout.
