Access Control
Access control in Rapid City is priced per door, and the per-door price depends on what the door already has. A door with an electric strike and a reader installed is a controller and a cable away from being managed. A door that needs new lock hardware, a request-to-exit sensor, a door position switch, and a cable run is a bigger job. We do not publish price ranges because two buildings with the same square footage can need very different systems. What we can do is show you exactly what moves the number, so you walk into the survey knowing which decisions are yours to make.
Every project is quoted after a site survey, so the number reflects the building and not a template. The survey is free, usually takes under an hour, and ends with an itemized proposal that separates equipment from labor. Start at our contact page or call (605) 600-7710.
What drives the cost of access control?
| Driver | What it does to the number | How to keep it in check |
|---|---|---|
| Door count | The base of the estimate. Each controlled door needs a reader, a controller port, lock hardware, and a cable run. | Control the doors that matter: exterior entries, server and records rooms, cash and inventory. Interior offices rarely need it. |
| Existing lock hardware | Electric strikes, maglocks, and electrified levers each have different hardware and door prep costs. Glass and aluminum storefront doors cost more to fit. | Reuse existing electrified hardware where it is sound. The survey checks each door. |
| Credential type | Cards and fobs are the least expensive. Mobile credentials and PIN keypads add software and setup. | Pick one credential for everyone and add a keypad only at doors where guests or vendors need it. |
| Cabling | Each door needs a cable to the controller. Finished walls raise the cost. See structured cabling cost. | Locate controllers near door clusters to shorten runs. |
| Integration | Tying doors to cameras, video intercom, and alarm adds configuration time but makes every event reviewable. | Integrate the front entry first. Most of the value is at the door people actually use. |
| Cloud management and monitoring | Cloud platforms carry a per-door subscription. Local controllers do not. | We build on UniFi Access, where the management is included with the hardware and there is no per-door fee. |
Where does the value come from?
Rekeying. The first time an employee leaves with a key, a business either rekeys every lock or accepts the risk. With access control, the credential is disabled from a phone and the locks never change. Add a log of every door event and remote unlock for a delivery, and the system pays for itself through the events you no longer have to react to.
What is included in a Brink Design access control proposal?
Readers, controllers, lock hardware and door prep as needed, request-to-exit and door position sensors, cabling, credentials, software setup, user and schedule configuration, and documentation. Scope is on the access control service page, and the front-entry intercom pairing is on the paging and intercom page.
Common questions
Questions people ask about this
- Is access control priced per door?
- Yes. Each controlled door is a reader, a controller port, lock hardware, and a cable run, so the estimate scales with door count and the condition of each door. The survey checks every door before we quote.
- Is there a monthly fee for access control?
- Not on the UniFi Access platform we install. Management is included with the hardware. Some cloud platforms charge per door per month, and we will tell you if a project actually needs one.
- Can access control work with our cameras?
- Yes. When doors and cameras share a platform, every badge event is tied to the video of the door at that moment, which makes reviewing an incident a thirty-second task.
- How long does an access control install take?
- A few doors with existing electrified hardware can be done in a day. Doors that need new lock hardware and cabling take longer, and the proposal includes a schedule.
